Heavyweight Cotton Hoodie Buying Guide: GSM, Fabric & Fit

A great hoodie is one of the hardest-working pieces in your wardrobe. It layers, it anchors a fit, it survives years of wear — if it's built right. The problem is most hoodies aren't built right. They pill after a few washes, the drawstrings go uneven, the cuffs stretch out, and the fabric thins to the point where it's barely a layer at all.

This guide covers everything you need to know to buy a heavyweight cotton hoodie that actually lasts.

What Does GSM Mean for Hoodies?

GSM stands for grams per square meter — it's the standard measurement for fabric weight. For hoodies, here's what the numbers mean in practice:

  • 280–320 GSM — Midweight fleece. Fine for mild weather, but thins out quickly with heavy use.
  • 320–400 GSM — Heavyweight fleece. This is the premium range. Substantial, warm, structured, and durable.
  • 400+ GSM — Ultra-heavyweight. Maximum warmth and structure. Built for cold climates and long-term wear.

At FNDMNTLS®, our hoodies are built in the heavyweight range — because a hoodie should feel like armor, not a suggestion.

Fabric Composition: What to Look For

100% Cotton Fleece

The gold standard for breathability and natural feel. Pure cotton fleece is soft, breathable, and gets better with age. The tradeoff: it can shrink if not pre-shrunk, and it's heavier than blends.

Cotton-Polyester Blend (80/20 or 70/30)

The most common construction in premium streetwear. The polyester adds durability, reduces shrinkage, and helps the hoodie hold its shape over time. An 80% cotton / 20% polyester blend is the sweet spot — you get the feel of cotton with the longevity of a synthetic blend.

French Terry vs. Fleece

French terry is lighter and smoother on the inside — better for layering and warmer climates. Fleece is brushed on the inside for warmth and softness — better for standalone wear in cooler weather. Both can be heavyweight; the difference is texture and warmth level.

Fit: Oversized vs. Standard

Oversized Heavyweight Hoodie

Dropped shoulders, extended body length, and a relaxed chest. This is the premium streetwear silhouette. The key is that the oversized fit is designed — proportions are balanced so it looks intentional, not just large. Pairs with slim or tapered bottoms to balance the volume.

Standard Fit Hoodie

Sits at the natural shoulder, follows the body more closely. Better for layering under jackets or for a cleaner, more minimal look. Still benefits from heavyweight fabric — a structured standard-fit hoodie in 350+ GSM is a wardrobe staple.

Construction Details That Matter

  • Ribbed cuffs and hem: Should be thick and tight enough to hold their shape after repeated wear and washing.
  • Kangaroo pocket: Double-stitched at the corners to prevent tearing.
  • Drawstring: Flat drawstrings stay even; round cords tend to pull to one side over time.
  • Hood lining: A lined hood adds warmth and structure. Unlined hoods are lighter but less substantial.
